Bondamunda is situated at about 8 kms from Rourkela station, the steel township of Orissa, on Howrah-Mumbai mainline. To meet the requirement of bulk transportation of steel and iron ore to various Steel plants, the Railway developed a marshalling yard at Bondamunda. As the traffic in the region proliferated and with the progress of electrification, the holding of Electric loco shed, Tata increased and it became clear that a separate goods oriented loco shed was needed in this region.
Electric loco shed, Bondamunda started its quest of excellence in maintenance of electric locomotives in January’1983 with a holding of 6 WAM4 locomotives. The shed, which was envisaged for homing 50 locomotives, was gradually upgraded for homing 100 locomotives of WAG5, WAG5H & WAG7 and subsequently the homing capacity has increased to 193 freight and coaching locomotives to meet the traffic requirement. The Shed is been assessed and approved to the standards of Integrated Management System (IMS) ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 & ISO 45001:2018.
