MULTI DISCIPLINARY ZONAL TRAINING INSTITUTE (MECHANICAL) /KGP
INTRODUCTION
Multi Disciplinary Zonal Training Institute previously known as Supervisors' Training Centre, Kharagpur, established as “System Technical School” way back in 1962, with the idea of building mechanical Supervisors for Railways through introducing five years Apprenticeship, has long and glorious past In due course, this Training Centre was assigned to provide training and testing of loco Running staff and categorize Loco Pilots on the basis of their energy efficient driving skills. In the year 1992, the “System Technical School” was renamed as “Supervisors’ Training Centre” and again upgraded to MDZTI (Mech) in the year 2022.
Scenario of Railway Transportation Service has been changed with the passes of time and to compete with this changed scenario, different need based training programmes viz. Disaster Management, Computer awareness (Information Technology), etc have been designed and implemented.
MDZT(Mech)/KGP is one of the Major Training Institutions of IR . It has its own Class-Rooms, Technical Model Rooms, Hostels, Laboratories, Gym-Hall, Auditorium, Train Driving Simulator, attached Integrated Workshop (largest in Asia), Computer Lab (with internet connectivity) etc for catering the training needs of Railway Employees of SER, ECoR & SECR collectively.
This institute conducts Seminars, Presentations, debates etc. on different topics related to Railways.
VISION & MISSION
The mission statement of MDZTI(Mech)/KGP is as follows “To Develop the Knowledge and Skills of Supervisors & Running Staff and to Effect Attitudinal Change by Systematic Training so as to Achieve Excellence in Work and bring about Continual Improvement in the Performance of the Indian Railways.” In order to fulfil above mission, MDZTI(Mech)/KGP has the following objectives to achieve.
- To Impart Qualitative and Effective Theoretical and Field Training to the Newly Recruited and Promoted Supervisors, Running staff and technicians to develop their Professional Competency.
- To Refresh and Update the Technical Knowledge of the C&W Supervisors & technicians in the area of Latest Maintenance Practices to Provide Safe Train Services to the Fullest Satisfaction of Our Esteemed Customers.
- To Refresh and Update the Technical Knowledge & Skills of Loco Running Staff to Provide Safe and Punctual Train Services.
- To Design and Deliver Need-Based Training to Supervisors & Running staff to Improve their Technical and supervisory Skills in keeping with changing trends.
- To Mould Supervisors into Effective Leaders to Achieve Organisational Goals.

NOTABLE WORK UNDER PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS :
- Centralized modern Auditorium inaugurated by respected GM at STC now MDZTI(Mech)/KGP on 17.02.2020.
- Developed 14 class room as smart class, facilitated with computer, projector and broadband internet connection.
- A 150 kwp roof top solar plant is installed in the building. It generates more electricity than actual consumption of STC.
- Total 230 kwp roof top solar plant is installed in the three Hostel buildings.
- 100% of the roof top rain water is harvested at the “Rain water harvesting plant” constructed in backyard.
- The Building is provided with non-skidding ramps, parking space & toilets earmarked for differently abled persons.
- A yoga room with a capacity of 50 persons is developed at the first floor for physical & emotional well being of the students and trainers.
- All electrical gadgets (lights, fans, air conditioner etc.) are properly star rated, LED based to ensure minimum power consumption.
- Hostels (App. 501 & DLPH) have been upgraded with a noticeable difference.
- Achieved IGBC GOLD rated certification on Feb.2021
- Shaded Technical Park developed at the backyard Hydraulic, Pneumatic and Sensoric Lab at a cost of Rs. 1.13 Cr. inaugurated on 25.02.2022 by Honorable General Manager SER.
SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENTS:
- Regional welding training Institute has been nominated for imparting training in Welder Trade through Rail Kaushal Vikash Yojna which is under the national scheme ‘Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikash Yojana(PMKVY)”.
- The inauguration was done by our honorable Railway Minister Sri Ashwini Vaishnaw on 17.09.2021 and our honorable GM Ms. Archana Joshi blessed the 1st batch on 30.09.2021.
- This Institute has already completed eighteen batches with total 321 trainees and they have got the certificates for successful completion of training in Welding trade.
- The nineteenth batch started on 17.04.2023 and is going on.
