Kolkata, 3rd June, 2015 :

South Eastern Railway observed the International Level Crossing Awareness Day at its Headquarters, Garden Reach o­n 3rd June, 2015 with a discussion o­n the Safety and Security of the travelling public at Unmanned Level Crossings.

Shri Radhey Shyam, General Manager, South Eastern Railway, Shri D.Kamilla, Addl.General Manager and other Principal Head of Departments including Shri Pradeep Kumar, Chief Safety Officer attended the programme.

Shri Radhey Shyam, GM/SER while discussing the issue said that the Safety of the travelling public has received its due importance and the railway has to sensitize the road users while crossing the unmanned level crossing.As it has been noticed that the majority of deaths in railway accidents occur at unmanned level crossings, South Eastern Railway has formulated a Safety Action Plan to eliminate Unmanned Level Crossings through various measures such as replacement of Unmanned Level Crossings with Limited Height Sub-Ways, suitable road diversions, manning of Unmanned Level crossings etc.During last 5 years, 355 unmanned level Crossings have been eliminated o­n the Railway.Further, Gate Mitras have been deployed at 466 identified unmanned level crossings to counsel road users o­n regular basis.GM/SER highlighted the basic methods of accident prevention i.e. education of staff and road users, effective supervision and adequate enforcement of rules and statutory provisions.Intensive measures o­n part of South Eastern Railway have been taken in this direction. Shri Radhey Shyam also said that Safety organization of South Eastern Railway have taken many measures which have been implemented with beneficial results to the rail users and road users.

Shri D.Kamilla, Addl.General Manager, South Eastern Railway stressed o­n educative safety oriented programme consisting man to man contacts and audio-visual safety propaganda through posters, leaflets, radio and television talks, advertisements and other means to keep the staff as well as public constantly safety conscious.Earlier, Shri Pradeep Kumar, Chief Safety Officer, South Eastern Railway appraised the General Manager that the Safety Organization of South Eastern Railway has occupied a fairly satisfactory position in regard to railway accidents esp. unmanned level crossings.

International Level Crossing Awareness Day is being observed at all four divisions of South Eastern Railway by organizing street plays (NUKKAD) to create awareness amongst the road users. This Safety Awareness Campaign & drive will continue upto 9thJune 2015 as a Part of Railyatri/Upbhokta Pakhwada.
