The 76th Independence Day was celebrated at South Eastern Railway Headquarters, Garden Reach with due solemnity. Ms. Archana Joshi, General Manager, South Eastern Railway hoisted the National Flag and took salute at the ceremonial parade presented by the contingents of Railway Protection Force, Civil Defence, St. John Ambulance Brigade and Bharat Scouts & Guides.
Addressing a gathering of railway officers, staff and their family members, General Manager said that SER organised a number of programmes for paying homage to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the independence of the country. The functions were held as a part of celebrating “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”, to commemorate 75 years of Independence.
Highlighting the achievements of SER in recent times, General Manager said that in 2021 -22, S E Railway loaded 195.01 million tonnes of freight which was 11% more than the previous year. In the current financial year, till July, SER has loaded 65.10 million tonnes of freight which is higher than the corresponding period of last year. Keeping in view the convenience and safety of the passengers, SER has completed the construction work of 7 Road Over Bridges and 25 Foot Over Bridges in the last financial year. General Manager stated that with a view to provide more amenities to the passengers, Platforms have been raised at 24 stations and extended at 9 stations.Apart from this, 6 important stations of South Eastern Railway have been identified for redevelopment as per the guidelines of Hon'ble Minister of Railways.
General Manager added that in the last financial year, SER reached the milestone of 100% electrification of its network. All LHB rakes have been made HOG (Head on Generation) compliant which resulted in saving of HSD oil worth Rs.102 crore. With a view to ensure comfort and safety of the passengers, SER is at present running 62 trains with LHB rakes. Moreover, the service of all Mail/Express trains and more than 90% Passenger trains have been restored which remained suspended during the Corona pandemic.
General Manger also stated that with a view to create additional capacity, altogether 106 KM of doubling/ third line work has been completed during last financial year and upto July of the current financial year. Safety of passengers is of paramount importance and as a major step towards making the railway network free from level crossing, altogether 66 level crossings have been eliminated in the last year. General Manager stated that as a result of the continuous efforts of officers and staff of RPF, 986 children have been rescued from railway premises in the last financial year. General Manager also mentioned about the selfless services of Railway doctors, nurses and paramedical staff during the Corona Pandemic and achievements of railway sport persons in the recent times. General Manager stated that SER has already implemented the "One Station one Product" scheme as announced in the budget of 2022-23 for the welfare of local artisans, potters, weavers, tribals etc.
General Manager stated that SER celebrated the iconic week of “Azadi ki Rail Gadi Aur Stations” in the month of July to commemorate 75years of independence. Different programmes like felicitation of freedom fighters or their family members, motor cycle rally etc. were organized. on 20th July, 2022, Smt. Jyotirmoyee Ghosh, eminent freedom fighter, flagged off from Howrah Station 12810 Howrah – Mumbai Mail, one of the oldest running trains of SER. Special programmes like light and sound show, photo exhibition etc. were organized at Balasore, Ranchi, Tatanagar and Chakradharpur stations. All employees of SER are associated with the “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign to mark the 75 years of Independence. General Manager appealed to the employees to join hands to work for the progress of the Nation.
