DIGHA STATION UPGRADES AS ECO SMART STATION

– PUBLIC OPINION ENTERTAINED

 

Kolkata, 13th July, 2019:

South Eastern Railway has taken major role in implementation of Green Initiatives and fulfillment of Green Standards as per the guidelines of National Green Tribunal (NGT). Digha Railway Station has been upgraded as “Eco Smart Station”. Action plans in this regard has been prepared to combat the pollution in terms of Solid Waste Management. Public Opinion has been given to the paramount importance in respect of Eco-Smart Stations.A team consisting of various departments of S E Railway, public representatives and forest officials of Govt. of West Bengal held meeting at Digha Railway Station recently. They monitored and compiled the progress of execution of action plans within the targeted time line by way of various critical analysis. They felt an urgent need for the railway to put in place and effective accountability in respect of Solid Waste Disposal, littering of Solid and Plastic Wastes, defecation etc.

The following items have been discussed and turned into actions in order to attain the prestigious environmental standard (ISO 14001) certification as directed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT):

ØMechanised Cleaning Work

ØGarbage to be segregated into three categories viz. Dry Waste, Wet Waste & Hazardous Waste and disposed

ØBottle Crushing Machine has been installed and public awareness are being done

ØAvoiding defecation along railway tracks

ØAfforestation and Plantation in and around station area

Besides, so many green initiatives have been discussed with the railways, public representative and Forest Department of Govt. of West Bengal.

This apart, Ranchi Station has already been upgraded as “Eco Smart Station”. Other 19 prominent stations of S E Railway are in the way to become “Eco Smart Station”.
