S E R CELEBRATES WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
Kolkata, 5thJune, 2019:
South Eastern Railway celebrated World Environment Day at this Railway’s Headquarters, Garden Reach this morning (05.06.2019). Sri Anupam Sharma, Additional General Manager, South Eastern Railway, Principal Officers, other officers and staff of South Eastern Railway Headquarters assembled in the premises to increase awareness of the importance of conserving the environment and engage in activity that serve to educate and improve their environment encircling railway areas. This year’s theme of the World Environment Day is “Beat Air Pollution”. Banners and posters bearing the message of World Environment Day were displayed around Railway Headquarters and colonies to create mass awareness.
On this occasion, South Eastern Railway organised a host of programmes like Plantation, Symposium, Presentation of Good Works done over South Eastern Railway for environmental matters, a movie show on “An Inconvenient Truth”, Sit and Draw Competition on “Environment Sustainability”etc. Principal Head of the Departments planted saplings in SER Headquarters.
Additional General Manager, Sri Anupam Sharma while speaking on the seminar said that railway people should strive hard to change their everyday lives to reduce the heavy burden of air pollution. He appealed to all officers and staff to follow the guidelines and directives of National Green Tribunal. Officer and Staff were also requested to make concerted care to keep the railway stations, trains and railway premises clean and environment friendly.
In an endeavour towards beating Air Pollution, South Eastern Railway has taken lots of initiative towards continuous afforestation, planting of trees in railway areas, on board effluent discharge, waste disposal, sewage treatment etc. SER has also taken different major initiatives in important railway stations towards environment with installation of LED lights, Rain Water harvesting, recycling, revival and creation of water bodies, setting up of solar panels at the Roof Top of station building and administrating offices, installation of bio-toilets in train coaches etc. Conservation of environment in railways not only makes lives sound and healthy but can boost the economy in generating railway revenue.
21 stations of South Eastern Railway have been taken up for upgradation as Eco-Friendly Smart Stations. Out of these, two stations viz. Digha and Ranchi have already been developed as Eco-Smart Stations.
A Sit and Draw Competition was organised on the occasion to spread awareness against environment pollution. World Environment Day was also celebrated at four Divisions of SER i.e Kharagpur, Chakradharpur, Adra and Ranchi towards brighter tomorrow bringing pollution free railway surroundings.
