SURGERY CAMP OF CLEFT LIP AND PALATE INAUGURATED IN S.E.RAILWAY CENTRAL HOSPITAL

 

Kolkata, 24th February, 2013:-

 

A Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery Camp was inaugurated today(24.02.2013) in the Central Hospital, South Eastern Railway, Garden Reach by Shri A.K.Verma, General Manager, SER in presence of Dr. Henry K Kawamoto, Director, Dept. of Craniofacial Surgery, University of California Los Angeles, Dr. A.Roy, Chief Medical Director & other Principal Head of theDepartments of SERandother distinguished guests.

 

The Surgery Camp dealing patients with cleft lip and palate is being organized with effect from 20th to 27th February, 2013 in association with “Operation Smile - India”,an International NGO functioning in 60 countries all over the world. In this mission in collaboration with SER, 51 skilled medical volunteers including Doctors, Nurses, Anesthesiologists etc. from around the world are taking part including fromcountries like USA, UK, Philippines, Belgium etc.

 

Shri A.K.Verma, General Manager, South Eastern Railway in his speech stated that S.E.Railway will continue to collaborate with “Operation Smile” and will provide the hospital facilities, operational infrastructure,post operative care and stay for the families of the patients. S.E.Railway is extremely proud to be associated with such a humanitarian effort which is actually improving the lives of children born with cleft lip and palate. Dr. Kawamoto thanked SER for providing the railway’s Hospital, itsDoctors & staff and other facilities. Ms. Cindy Reglan, a neo-natal intensive care specialist from USA and Abhishek Sengupta, the Programme Manager of “Operation Smile – India” was also present.

 

Patients from all over West Bengal, especially from rural areas have to first undergo medical examination to ascertain if they are fit for surgery or not.They are then operated in Central Hospital, South Eastern Railway and kept in the Post-operative Ward before release. SER apart from hospital facilities is also providingplace to stay for the parents and family members of the children who are undergoing surgery. A total of 120 surgeries is expected to be performed on the cleft lip and cleft palate affected children.

 

Dr. Anjana Malhotra, Senior Doctor and renowned plastic surgeon of South Eastern Railwayco-ordinated this venture to involve the Doctors, Paramedics, Nurses, Hospital Staff and Administrative Officers of SER for this noble cause of bringing smiles to the faces of patients suffering from cleft lip and palate.
