GROWTH IN SER’s FREIGHT LOADING AND EARNINGS

During the first three quarter i.e. April –December of the current financial year (2012-13), South Eastern Railway has loaded 92.16 million tonnes of freight as against 88.14 million tonnes loaded during the corresponding period of last year thus registering a growth of 4.02 million tonnes i.e. 4.56%.
The performance of S.E.Railway is more remarkable because it has loaded 5.75 million tonnes more than the Railway Board’s laid down target till December, 2012 which is an increase of 6.65%
The loading of the main commodity i.e. Iron Ore during the above period has been 50.33 million tonnes as against 46.85 million tonnes of Iron Ore loaded during the same period of last financial year i.e. a growth of 7.43%. The total loading of Iron Ore has gone up in spite of fall in demand for export of Iron Ore from 7.81 million tonnes last year to 2.80 million tonnes during the current year. Iron ore loading has registered a growth of 13.23% over the target set by Railway Board.
S.E.Railway has also recorded a positive growth in loading of Coal, other raw materials to steel plants, Pig Iron & Finished Steel, Cement, Food grains & Fertilizers.
Earnings from freight traffic have recorded a considerable jump of 5.91% during the first nine months of the current financial year in comparison to the corresponding period of last year. During April to December of the current financial year, SER has earned Rs. 6397.94 crores from freight traffic as against Rs.6040.84 crores earned from freight sector during the same period of last year.
