OBSERVANCE OF “SWACHHTA PAKHWADA”

Kolkata, 31st August, 2017:
Indian Railways organized a special cleanliness drive, “Rail Swachhta Pakhwada” during the period from 16th to 31st August, 2017 throughout the country. South Eastern Railway also organized the “Swachhta Pakhwada” at its headquarters, Garden Reach and in all four divisions viz Kharagpur, Adra, Ranchi and Chakradharpur. The themes of the different dates are mentioned below.
16-8-2017: Swachh Awareness - The day started by administering “Swachhta Pledge” to railway staff and officers. on this day “Prabhat Pheris” were taken out in the morning with the slogan “Swachh Rail, Swachh Bharat” with a view to raise awareness of all railway employees and their families to ensure cleanliness in the vicinity of their habitat.
In S E Railway, General Manager, Sri S N Agrawal administered the “Swachhta Pledge” to staff and officers at S E Railway Headquarters, Garden Reach. General Manager Sri Agrawal undertook a long walk around North & South Colonies and Headquarters to spread awareness about clean environment. Two Nukkad Nataks were organized in front of BNR Officers’ Club and New Administrative Building of SER Headquarters which carried the message of more cleaner and greener railway premises.
17-8-2017: Swachh Samwad (Cleanliness Diaglogue/Public) – Seminars on sanitation and upkeep of railway stations were organized at all the Divisions viz. Kharagpur, Adra, Ranchi and Chakradharpur. NGOs, Charitable Institutions, Scouts & Guides, Passengers and other Stake Holders were involved. Painting and poster competitions on the theme of cleanliness were also organized in railway schools.
18-8-2017: Swachh Samwad (Cleanliness Diaglogue/In House) – Seminars and Workshops were organized on sanitation involving the employees and residents of railway colonies. Cleanliness Awareness Campaigns were also organized in all Divisions by displaying Anti-littering Notices in the railway colonies, railway institutes, rest houses, dormitories, running rooms, hospitals, colleges and schools. To organize this campaign, awareness posters, leaflets, nukkad shows etc. were organized.
19-8-2017: Swachh Stations (Clean Stations)- Intensive Cleanliness Drives at all A-1 and A Category Stations were undertaken. Adequate provision of Dustbins at stations was also ensured.
20-8-2017: Swachh Stations (Clean Stations)- This day was dedicated to intensive cleaning of all stations other than A-1 and A Category Stations. Segregation of waste was encouraged by setting up of separate dustbins. Plastic bottle crushers were installed so that plastic thrown does not choke drains or water outlets. Efforts were made to ensure at least one platform at important stations “litter free”. Measures were also adopted to discourage use of plastic.
21-8-2017: Swachh Railgaadi (Clean Train) – Intensive inspection/cleaning of listed trains was undertaken by team of officers and staff to ensure cleanliness onboard.
Sri S N Agrawal, General Manager, S E Railway inspected the overall cleanliness of 12262 Howrah-Mumbai Duronto Express before departure of the train from Howrah Station. General Manager visited the different coaches of the train as well as toilets and inspected the berths, flooring, charging facilities, pest control measures etc. He also visited the Pantry Car and thoroughly inspected the food items to be supplied to the passengers. Sri Agrawal also interacted with the passengers of the train and sought their valuable opinion regarding the different services.
22-8-2017: Swach Railgaadi (Clean Train) – Intensive inspection/cleaning of all other trains not covering the drive on 21/8/2017 was undertaken on this day. Trains were inspected in the Washing Lines, Yards and Stations. Toilets and quality of linen were also checked.
23-8-2017: Swachh Parisar (Clean Work Place) – Intensive drive was undertaken to clean up and improve offices including railway hospitals, railway schools, coaching depots and lobbies.
24-8-2017: Swachh Parisar (Clean Residential Premises) – Residential premises including railway colonies, retiring/waiting rooms, rest houses, dormitories, running rooms etc. were taken up for intensive cleaning on this day.
Shri S.N.Agrawal, General Manager, South Eastern Railway and other Principal Head of Departments planted saplings in S E Railway Colony at Garden Reach as a part of Swachhta Pakhwada. Tree Plantation Programme was also organized at the four Divisions of S E Railway.
25-8-2017: Swachh Ahar – on this day, intensive cleaning of all canteens was taken up.
26-8-2017: Swachh Ahar – on this day, intensive cleaning of all pantry cars in trains was taken up with a view to serve clean and hygienic food. Samples of food were taken for checking and feed back of the passengers were obtained on quality of food served.
27-8-2017: Swachh Neer (Clean Water) – Intensive inspection of all water installations including filter plants, sources of water supply, water taps for drinking water at stations as well as trains was undertaken.
28-8-2017: Swachh Neer (Clean Water) – Intensive inspection of all water installations of offices, railway colonies, railway hospitals etc. was taken up on this day to ensure availability of quality potable water at passenger service locations like waiting rooms, retiring rooms, platforms, trains etc.
29-8-2017: Swachh Prasadhan – This day was dedicated to intensive cleaning of all toilet blocks at railway stations, coaching depots, trains and surrounding areas. People were encouraged to desist from open defecation in areas approaching railway stations or on tracks.
30-8-2017: Swachh Competition – A sense of healthy competition was inculcated during the Pakhwada and commendations were given to those units which are found regularly cleaned. Supervisors/Staff working on cleaning activities were suitably recognized on this day.
31-8-2017: Review– on this day, work carried out during the Pakhwada was reviewed with a note not to confine such efforts for a fortnight but to make it a continuous process.
