The 71st Independence Day was celebrated at South Eastern Railway Headquarters, Garden Reach with due solemnity and enthusiasm.

Shri S.N.Agrawal, General Manager, S E Railway unfurled the National Flag and took salute at the ceremonial parade presented by the smart contingents of Railway Protection Force (RPF), S E Railway Bharat Scouts & Guides, St. John Ambulance Brigade, Civil Defence etc. While paying glowing tributes to our freedom fighters and gallant Jawans who sacrificed their lives defending the country, Shri S.N.Agrawal urged all railway men to make all out efforts towards safety and security of the passengers and to work diligently to ensure safe and secured rail travel.  General Manager administered a pledge ( Sankalp) for New India to all officers and staff along with their family members. 

Highlighting the achievements of SER, General Manager said that S.E.Railway has been extremely important Zonal Railway which in its physical spread occupies o­nly 4% of the total route kilometer of Indian Railways , yet generates 13% of the originating freight loading.   General Manager said that S E Railway carried 147.73 million tones of revenue earning freight in 2016-17 surpassing Railway Board’s target of 141.7 million tones and achieved operating ratio of 73.60%. In the current fiscal, South Eastern Railway has carried 48.33 million tonnes of freight upto July’2017 which is 0.86 % higher than the corresponding period of last year. The apportioned earnings upto July, in the current year has been Rs.4545 crores which is 9.5% more than corresponding period of last year, as added by the General Manager.

Considering the heavy rush of passengers, General Manager said that this railway  introduced 4 new Express Trains  in  2016-17. This apart, 494 Special Trains along with 86 Premium & Suvidha specials and additional 5000 coaches were provided for the passengers . General Manager also highlighted the achievements of SER in infrastructural developments and passenger amenity works like doubling, 3rd line construction, platform extension, installation of   escalators & lifts, provision of bio-toilet in coaches, providing Wi-Fi facility, installation of POS machines etc.

Safety and security of the travelling passengers have got highest priority in SER. All major stations have been covered with CCTV Surveillance and Mail/Express Trains and Suburban Trains are being escorted by RPF and GRP personnel. GM stressed o­n conducting passenger awareness programmes and safety drives and laid emphasis o­n elimination of unmanned level crossings.  GM also appealed to all railway men to continue with initiatives to improve cleanliness both in stations and trains. GM, Shri Agrawal also said that SER has keen interest in sports and other socio-cultural activities. SER sports personnel, both men and women, have secured lot of titles in International & All India Railways level.

Later, Smt. Surbhi Agrawal, President, South Eastern Railway Women’s Welfare Organization (SERWWO) along with other members  of SERWWO distributed gift hampers to the indoor patients of S E Railway Central Hospital, Garden Reach.
