REDEVELOPMENT OF SHALIMAR RAILWAY STATION OF SOUTH EASTERN RAILWAY

Kolkata, 13th March, 2025

Shalimar Railway Station is o­ne of the major Railway Terminal of South Eastern Railway. It is an important hub for long-distance trains, particularly those connecting Kolkata to various parts of India. Shalimar Station was initially developed as a goods terminal before and later being upgraded to a passenger station. It was introduced as an alternative to Howrah Junction to decongest train traffic. Over time, it has gained importance, especially for South Eastern Railway bound trains. It helps in reducing the extra rush at Howrah Junction, o­ne of the busiest Railway stations in Eastern India. Shalimar Station primarily serves Express and superfast trains operated by the South Eastern Railway. These trains provide crucial connectivity between Kolkata and cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Udaipur, Puri and Bhubaneswar. With the expansion of South Eastern Railway services, Shalimar is emerging as a key passenger terminal. Presently South Eastern Railway is working o­n improving infrastructure at Shalimar to facilitate more passengers and trains.

A number of Mail/Express trains are originating from/terminating at Shalimar and therefore it has become essential to redevelop the station and yard of Shalimar. This station plays a pivotal role in passenger transport under the SER jurisdiction. The Re-development of Shalimar Railway Station was planned with construction of New Station building, development of circulating area, construction of new Island platforms, Foot Over Bridges, Lifts, Escalators, Ramps, Travellators and other developmental works etc.

At present, construction of New Station Building (Structural part), construction of o­ne 12 metre wide Foot Over Bridge connecting Platform 1 to 2 & 3 and other second 12 metre wide Foot Over Bridge connecting Platform No. 2 & 3 to 4 & 5, 4 Nos. of Pit Lines & 6 Nos. of Stabling lines, Refurbishing of New Platform No-1, construction of Concrete Road at station area, Construction of Car Parking area o­n Ganga end, Subways/underpasses UP-4 towards Jetty, 3 nos. of 2 lakh gallon capacity overhead Tank and other infrastructural works have been completed.

 

Five Nos. of lifts at the station building, four Nos. of Escalators connecting to Foot Over Bridges from Platform No. 1 to Platform No 2/3, Four Nos. of Travellators connecting to underpass from Platform No 1 to Platform No 2/3, four Nos. of Escalators connecting Platforms and subway-3 have been commissioned.

 

The remaining development works at Shalimar Station will be completed in a phased manner, ensuring minimal disruption to railway operations while enhancing the overall passenger experience. The remaining projects include:

• Construction/Extension of Platform Shelter over Platform No. 2/3

• construction of New Island Platform No. 4/5 with two nos. Subway Dispersals o­n Platform 4/5

• Construction of Road Over Bridge of span 64.09 metres

·Ramps and o­ne Limited Height Subway 

• Installation of CCTV

·Public Address system etc.
