SER’S FREIGHT BUSINESS INITIATIVES

Kolkata, Aug.12, 2015:

As a part of month-long Freight Business Initiatives drive as advised by Railway Board, South Eastern Railway will be focusing o­n the ways and means to increase the originating freight loading. A series of seminars will be organised for the enhancement of freight traffic. The first of these Seminars o­n Steel Production and Despatch was organised by South Eastern Railway at its Headquarters, Garden Reach this afternoon (12.8.2015).The focus of the Seminar is o­n originating freight loading, performance/plan of action and completion of throughput enhancement works.

The seminar was attended by delegates of all the Steel Manufacturing Companies over South Eastern Railway jurisdiction viz. Tata Steel, SAIL, Jindal, Tata Sponge & Iron Ltd., Electro Steel, Tata Sponge, Adhunik etc.Shri Ambrish Kumar Gupta, Chief Operations Manager, S E Railway in his welcome address said that this Seminar is the appropriate forum for the Steel Industries through which they can express their views and seek help from this railway to meet the loading target. Shri Gupta assured them about extending of all sorts of co-operation from the railway side to enhance their business.

Shri Radhey Shyam, General Manager, South Eastern Railway said that last year this railway loaded 124.05 million tonnes of originating freightand this year SER has the target of 134 million tonnes fixed by Railway Board.To facilitate rake movements, several infrastructural developments have been undertaken by this Railway which will help the steel industry to boost up its business.The 3rd line and Doubling Works in relation to capacity enhancement at all major congested sections of this railway are in progress and the same will be completed within 3 to 4 years. General Manager also mentioned that SER is ready to encourage growth in loading in every sector, especially for the steel industries.Availability of rakes will be ensured to fulfil loading targets and sidings are also o­n improvement paths to make rake movement faster.

The delegates from steel industries appreciated SER’s initiatives for arranging such type of meet and thanked the Railway Administration for giving an open platform to express their views o­n different aspects and assured to work together for mutual growth.They also expressed that there is a downward trend in the steel market which is adversely affecting the production of finished goods and abruptly changing the raw materials consumption pattern of steel industries.However, they expressed their optimistic view of steel market to be bullish in near future that will help meet loading target.SAIL is targeting an incremental loading of 4 million tons through railways in 2015-16 and TATA Steel is also aiming at 1 MT of incremental traffic.

The second Seminar in this series of freight business initiatives will be held o­n 18thAugust, 2015 where all the Cement Companies within the jurisdiction of SER are expected to participate and the third and last Seminar will be held with Iron Ore Loading Companies in this month.
