Kolkata, July 30, 2015:

A day-long Seminar was organized o­n the theme “Corrosion in coaches– Problems & Remedies” at SER Headquarters, Garden Reach, this morning (30.07.2015).

Shri Hemant Kumar, Member Mechanical, Railway Board graced the Seminar as Chief Speaker, while Shri Radhey Shyam, General Manager, South Eastern Railway spoke about the relevance of the seminar and to utilize the better practices in maintenance of passenger coaches.Shri V.K.Raina, Ex.General Manager, S E Railway and Shri Debasish Roy, Ex.Chief Mechanical Engineer, Eastern Railway also attended as experienced guest speakers who advised to ensure that the coaches in services should always be in sound condition. Shri D Kamilla, Addl. General Manager, S E Railway also spoke o­n the subject.

Speaking o­n the occasion, Shri Hemant Kumar, Member Mechanical said that Corrosion is a vital aspect of coaching stock.Proper up keeping and maintenance of corrosion is necessary to ensure reliability and availability of coaching stock.Member Mechanical also said that immediate attention should be paid by the Workshop staff to arrest corrosion when noticed so that the strength of the body shell of the coaches is not impaired.When coaches are received in the maintenance depots or workshops for repairs, they should be thoroughly inspected for locating corroded areas by the trained staff to take preventive measure. Member Mechanical stressed o­n maintaining quality according to RDSO specifications while manufacturing the coaches in Production Units.

Earlier, Shri D.K.Gayen, Chief Mechanical Engineer, S E Railway delivered the welcome address and spoke about the preventive measures of erosion, corrosion and stress corrosion for better maintenanceof coaches. The expert officers from Railway Design and Standard Organizations (RDSO), Railway Coach Factory, Integral Coach Factory, Railway Workshops, Zonal Railways and other Production Units participated in the seminar with Power Point presentations o­n Types of corrosion – Reasons and prescribed preventive measures, Corrosion preventive measures undertaken during POH in workshop, Analysis of corrosion in MLR coaches, Corrosion preventive measures in new manufactured coaches, Quality problems in Paints, painting process in workshop and production unit and solutions, Corrosion performance of LHB type AC and non AC coaches etc.
