SER OBSERVES WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

 

Kolkata, 5th June, 2018:

 

The World Environment Day was observed at S E Railway Headquarters, Garden Reach today (5thJune, 2018) with the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution – If you can’t reuse it, Refuse it” to raise awareness about environment to protect the Mother Earth. This is a much acclaimed campaign to establish changes all over the world to make life better and more natural.

 

Sri S N Agrawal, General Manager, South Eastern Railway along-with Principal Head of the Departments, senior officers and a large number of staff took part in an awareness campaign and planted saplings in different places of S E Railway Headquarters. A fountain was also inaugurated at the Maitree Park as a part of observance of World Environment Day. This is a day to especially focus o­n the current environmental conditions to make our environment better. It is a day for rail passengers and rail users to change their attitude towards environment making a safe future.

 

S E Railway has been striving all along to make eco-friendly development in railways. This railway has also taken environment friendly initiatives during the year 2017-18. To work in this direction and for better environment, S E Railway planted 7.34 lakh trees in railway land across the four divisions. As many as 5094 Bio-toilet Tanks have been fitted in 1364 coaches. This apart, all the conventional lights have been replaced by LED lights in all 365 commercial stations of this railway. 274 Solar Panels of capacity 537.68 KWP have been installed over this railway. S E Railway has also introduced disposal of solid waste in an innovative and eco-friendly manner. The process includes waste segregation at source, collection thereof by the entrusted company viz. Vital Waste and dispatch of the segregated waste materials to the local industries that use recyclable items as inputs. A waste audit has been conducted to identify and quantify the composition of the waste stream generated at S E Railway Headquarters and also to analyze its Environmental Impact.

 

World Environment Day was also observed at all the four divisions of S E Railway in a befitting manner.
