SER OBSERVES GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF 50 YEARS OF EMU SERVICES

 

Kolkata, 2nd May, 2018:

 

The first EMU train started its maiden journey between Howrah and Panskura o­n 01.05.1968 after the electrification of Howrah-Kharagpur section in the year 1968. To mark this momentous day and the successful completion of 50 years of suburban services of South Eastern Railway (1968-2018), the 5th rake of 12-car GPS based 3-phase indigenous EMU train with CCTV Cameras in ladies compartment was flagged off from Howrah station by Shri Sachindra Mohan Chakraborty o­ne of the Senior most passengers and Smt. Basanti Deb Goswami, Senior Technician of Tikiapara Car Shed yesterday (01.05.2018) for Panskura. Shri Anirban Datta, Addl. General Manager, South Eastern Railway, Shri J.K.Saha, Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer, Shri Manoranjan Pradhan, Addl. Divisional Railway Manager, Kharagpur and other Sr. Officers were also present.

With increase of huge passengers of suburban sections, the number of EMU service have been increased in manifolds in all 7 suburban sections of South Eastern Railway i.e Howrah-Kharagpur, Kharagpur-Midnapore, Shalimar-Santragachi, Panskura-Haldia, Howrah-Amta, Tamluk-Digha and Kharagpur-Hijli-Belda.

More than 3.75 lakhs passengers travel per day with 194 EMU trains run o­n a day o­n South Eastern Railway’s suburban sections with revenue generation of average Rs 29 lakhs per day. The process of conversion from 9-Car rake to 12-Car rake is in progress and already 22 rakes with 12-Car coaches have been done. In order to provide adequate maintenance of EMU rakes, there are total 3 Car Sheds in Kharagpur Division located at Tikiapara, Panskura and Kharagpur to have more pit lines to upkeep EMU rakes and maintain the massive operation daily.Two ladies’ coaches for female passengers have been ear-marked in each 12-Car rake for safety and security of female commuters. All new rakes are provided with Public Address System through which the passengers in the coaches are informed of approaching stations as well as Platforms. SER has taken decision to convert all 9-Car EMU rakes into 12-Car rake within a very short span of time to fulfil the demand of suburban passengers.
