HIJLI STATION DECLARED AS THE FIRST ALL WOMEN RAILWAY STATION

IN SOUTH EASTERN RAILWAY

 

Kolkata, 8th March, 2018

 

To observe the International Women’s Day and honouring women empowerment in every sphere in a befitting manner, South Eastern has taken special initiatives to run and manage some of its core operations with the help of female employees.

 

Hijli – The first ‘All-women’ Railway Station in West Bengal

In a significant development, South Eastern Railway’s Kharagpur division has declared Hijli station in West Midnapore district as “All Women Station”. It is the first ‘All Women Station’ in West Bengal as well as in S.E.Railway.

Hijli, o­n Kharagpur-Bhadrak section, is the nearest railway station of IIT, Kharagpur having an old history from the time of pre independence era. In this station, the station master, booking clerks, security personnel, points staff and sub staff will be o­nly women. The male staff working at Hijli is being replaced by women. This is aimed to empower women and encourage them to show their potentiality. This is a part of SER’s endeavour to extend opportunity to the lady employees in every sphere viz. Train Guards, Ticket Examiners, Technicians, Loco Pilots and other capacities.

 

All Women Sections in Kharagpur Workshop

Kharagpur Workshop has taken effective steps to bring forward its ladies work force. The Distribution Valve Overhauling Section of Kharagpur Workshop is involved in overhauling and testing of 8 Distributor Valves round the clock. This section has been developed as Centre of Excellence. Features like Computerised Test Stand, Air Conditioned Rooms, Ergonomic Work Benches, Laser Charging Machine, Mechanised Cleaning System, Epoxy Flooring etc. have been provided. The section is predominantly manned by ladies (7 out of 8). All the staff have been provided with Apron, Nose Musk, Name Badge etc. to meet their professional requirement.

The Coil Manufacturing Unit of Diesel POH (Periodical Overhauling) Shop was established o­n 27th September 1981. This unit is solely run by the female staff and at present this section is managed by 25 lady employees. Presently, this unit is manufacturing Power Coil, Equalizing Coil for Armature of Traction Generator, Traction Motor & EMU. Coil Manufacturing Section has been accredited with IMS (Comprising ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 18000 & ISO 50001) for their excellent performance in every sphere of activities.

 

All Lady TTIs in Howrah-Digha Super AC Express

Presently, the ticket checking activities in 12847/12848 Howrah-DighaSuper AC Express is being managed by all female Travelling Ticket Inspectors. There are presently 6 women TTIs at Howrah Station New Complex who are manning Howrah-Digha Super AC Express w.e.f. January, 2018. In turn, two female TTIs in each trip are performing the duties of ticket checking in the entire train with utmost satisfaction of the passengers who have given good feed back in this connection. This is the first time in S E Railway that a full train of 10 coaches are being manned by female TTIs.
