RAILWAY MINISTER FLAGS OFF NEW TRAINS AND ANNOUNCES LOT OF INITIATIVES FOR PASSENGERS AND RAILWAY INFRASTRUCTURE

 

Kolkata, 8th January, 2016:

            Sri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Hon’ble Union Minister for Railways flagged off three new trains, announced five new trains and extension of services of four existing EMU local trains of South Eastern Railway, inaugurated Paperless Ticketing Service for Suburban passengers through smart phone and display of first AC Electric Locomotive at Regional Rail Museum, Howrah of Eastern Railway, announced  Green Initiatives in stations and rakes of Metro Railway, Kolkata and commencing of the Lowering of Tunnel Boring Machine of Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation Ltd. at an impressive function held at Howrah Station this morning (08/1/2016).

            Sri Arup Roy, Hon’ble Minister In-charge, Agriculture Marketing, Govt. of West Bengal and Dr. Kakali Ghosh Dastidar, Hon’ble Member of Parliament graced the occasion as Guests of Honour. Sri A K Goel, General Manager, South Eastern Railway, Sri R K Gupta, General Manager, Eastern Railway, Sri Ashwani Kapoor, General Manager, Metro Railway and Chairman & Managing Director, Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation Limited and other distinguished guests attended the programme.

            Hon’ble Railway Minister, Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu spoke about the inititiatives taken by Railways to offer better customer services and fulfillment of budget announcements. In this connection he mentioned about passenger friendly measures for booking and reservation of tickets and improvement in quality of food served in trains.  He spoke about efforts for improvement in cleanliness of station premises, coaches of trains and upgradation of interior of coaches. Speaking about the different passenger amenity measures, Shri Prabhu mentioned about the newly constructed Mechanised Laundries which have resulted in improved linen quality. He stated that as per catering policy, passengers can now have quality food of their own choice during journey time.  He also spoke about energy efficiency programmes, green energy initiatives and energy audit in railways.  Shri Prabhu said that Railway’s top most priority is safety and security of passengers and recently launched Apps for security of women have become very popular as thousands of people have downloaded it.  He added that Railway’s main focus is customer service and mentioned about the increased use of twitter for redressal of grievances and complaints of passengers.  He advised all General Managers of Indian Railways to ensure punctuality of train services and to take steps to increase the comfort of travelling public.  He also mentioned about collaboration with Japan for improvement of railway infrastructure in the country and sought assistance of different State Govts and Railway employees for smooth functioning and further development of railway network.       

            Earlier, Sri A K Goel, General Manager, South Eastern Railway while welcoming the Hon’ble Minister for Railways and other distinguished guests said that S E Railway being a freight carrying railway has crossed 100 million tonnes in freight loading in this financial year  which is an  improvement of about 7.4% over last financial year. Although, SER has traditionally been freight oriented railway, it has also given importance to the running of mail/express, passenger and suburban local trains. o­n an average, SER is running 994 trains daily including 544 mail/express, passenger and suburban trains. Besides regular services, this railway has run 498 special trains including 164 Premium or Suvidha Trains till December in the current financial year to clear extra rush of passengers achieving more than 90% punctuality. GM/SER stated that three new trains namely Howrah-Yesvantpur Weekly AC Express, Howrah-Pune Suvidha AC Express and Panskura-Digha EMU Local and announcing of five new train services viz. Howrah-LTT Suvidha AC Express, Shalimar-Chennai Suvidha AC Express, Santragachi-Amta EMU Passenger, Kharagpur-Santragachi MEMU Passenger and Rupsa-Bhanjpur DEMU Passenger and extension of four existing EMU local trains which would immensely benefit the travelling public and rail users. The launching of Mobile App for Paperless Ticketing Service of Suburban Services of Eastern Railway by Hon’ble Rail Minister is an important passenger friendly initiative avoiding queuing before the ticket counters. The Green Initiative of Metro Railway to be announced by Hon’ble MR is a step towards reducing carbon foot print for a cleaner earth and with announcing the commencement of the Lowering of the Tunnel Boring Machine the work of tunnel under Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation Ltd. would get a fillip. GM/SER also said that SER has always strived hard for running trains punctually and ensure safety and security to passengers as well as meeting the freight loading targets and committed to the best services to the customers and nation.
